Did someone say a sweet flyby? An’s Gelato, the beloved local brand twice named the best independent ice cream shop in America by USA Today, is gearing up for takeoff at a very famous address. Later this summer, they’re expanding to Oceanside. An’s is setting up shop inside the iconic beachfront cottage known far and wide as…the Top Gun house!
A beloved brand at a beloved location
For movie buffs, this location is hallowed ground. The historic 1888 Folk Victorian cottage, originally known as the Graves House, gained global fame when it was featured in the 1986 blockbuster film Top Gun. Starring Tom Cruise as the rule-breaking Navy pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, the film used the picturesque property as the home of his love interest – civilian instructor and astrophysicist Charlie Blackwood (played by Kelly McGillis). While the blue cottage has since been restored – and even relocated a block over – it still perfectly captures the cinematic nostalgia of the ’80s.
Welcome, An’s Gate D5!
Instead of only relying on the Hollywood connection, the team at An’s Gelato brings their own creative spin. Continuing their tradition of immersive storefronts (like their North Park dry cleaners or Del Mar hatmakers) this new location will be officially known as An’s Gate D5. You’ll be transported into a retro 1970s and 1980s-era airport terminal. Customers will enter through the “security” checkpoint and line up to order at a flight check-in counter.
Moreover, gelato portions will be cleverly categorized as “carry-on” or “checked bag” sizes. The menu will feature An’s signature rotation of 7 small-batch flavors, which will be named after international travel destinations.
When do the gates open to the new ice cream shop?
The gates should open this summer, but we don’t have an exact date yet. Whether you’re a movie fanatic or an avid dessert lover, this new spot has to be on your radar.
