Summer’s coming to an end, but we still have time to sneak in a couple of nature getaways. California is packed with national parks, hiking trails, waterfalls, and more, so there’s never a shortage of inspiration. But if you’re looking for a unique experience, a stay like no other… then we don’t think you can go wilder than AREA 55. Nestled right by beautiful Joshua Tree, this UFO Airbnb attracts space enthusiasts and glamping lovers from all around.
AREA 55

Futuro Houses, such as this one, were designed in the 60s by Matti Suuronen as portable ski chalets. The curved and oval design makes it look like a UFO, but there’s a reason behind it – so that snow would fall right off! There are only 85 of them spread around the world, and 19 in the US. This is the only one where you can experience a Futuro House for yourself!
AREA 55 also has a cool backstory – it was originally at the Playboy Club Hotel in Wisconsin. Rumor is, this was one of Hugh Hefner’s favorite items there.
The 13-foot-tall off-grid site is a great combo of a space designed to kick back and enjoy nature, but with modern touches. You may think a UFO is the peak of technology…but keep in mind this is still classified as a glamping spot. The owners encourage visitors to explore board games, play their favorite tunes through the modern sound system, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee with killer views. There’s also a BBQ spot outside, so you can prepare and eat dinner right under the stars. Does it get any better?
The “glam” part hints at the hot water shower, private bathrooms, and the outdoor kitchen. There is, however, no internet connection. That reinforces it as the perfect spot to disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with Mother Nature. You can recharge your devices though, thanks to solar energy.

Not surprisingly, the State of California recognized this unique spot as a historic landmark. Prices for a night at the orange UFO vary massively depending on the date, but mid-week stays start from $250. They also host weddings and special events.
Joshua Tree

AREA 55 is right outside the beautiful Joshua Tree, so it’s the perfect stay if you’re looking to explore this part of SoCal. It’s a unique desert region, known for its striking landscape, iconic twisted Joshua trees, and wide-open skies. Home to Joshua Tree National Park, the area is a favorite for hiking, stargazing, rock climbing, and experiencing the peaceful beauty of the high desert.
