The North Chapel, which was once a place of worship for sailors back in the 20s, is now a renovated space by the Liberty Station Park. Relax in the candlelit setting and admire the high ceilings, original wood floors, and other ornate features. This season, the stunning venue will be illuminated by Candlelight’s signature sea of candles and filled with the sounds of captivating musical notes.
San Diego’s only chapel and event venue, The North Chapel, is definitely worth visiting either for an intimate Candlelight concert or hiring for a special occasion. Located on 2881 Roosevelt Rd, CHAPEL is only a 7-minute drive from the airport, and 8 minutes on foot from Premier Hotel. You can also discover complimentary parking at Liberty Station.
Facts, Curiosities and Interesting Things about The North Chapel
1. Significance
The North Chapel holds a great deal of emotional weight for recruits, officers, and veterans of the U.S. Navy. Before being deployed, men and women would visit the religious retreat or would even reserve it for memorials and weddings.
2. Community opposition
In 2018, The North Chapel was at the point of closing, and 828 Venue Management began leasing the chapel. A renovation project was proposed and later stalled by the local community’s opposition to the changes. After a great deal of petitioning, the community’s qualms were heard and the company proceeded with a renovation plan that met preservation standards.
3. The only white building at the NTC
As the only white building at the former Naval Training Center, The North Chapel certainly stood out. The NTC, also known as “boot camp”, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The preserved historic buildings and original architecture are open to the public to honor the Navy’s history in San Diego.
Candlelight at CHAPEL
Fans of music by Queen, Taylor Swift, ABBA, and more can look forward to mesmerizing evenings at The North Chapel. If you prefer classical composers, you can also catch a special tribute to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and for something a little bit spookier this fall, you can enjoy an evening of Halloween classics.
What else can you do at CHAPEL?
Aside from planning a one-of-a-kind event at The North Chapel, you can explore Liberty Station—its surrounding center for commerce, history, and the arts. Keep an eye on Liberty Station events to see what’s going on near CHAPEL throughout the year.
