If you’ve been looking for a reason to plan your next zoo trip – besides the newly opened Elephant Valley – we’ve got 4 fast and fuzzy reasons for you. For the first time since 2020, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park has welcomed a brand-new litter of cheetah cubs!
Cheetah cubs, welcome to the world!
Born this January, the 4 male cubs have spent their first couple of months bonding behind the scenes with their first-time mom, Kelechi. The new family has been keeping cozy in a private den at the park’s Carnivore Conservation Center. And if you’re wondering what the vibe is there…they’re behaving exactly as they would in their native habitats.
However, these energetic guys are finally starting to emerge from their den, which means you can now catch a glimpse of them during the park’s Ultimate Safari experience.
Family life
According to zoo officials, Kelechi has been an amazing mother. She has been highly attentive during thee early months, grooming the boys and keeping them out of trouble. As the cubs grow more curious and adventurous, she keeps a watchful eye on them. She even calls them back whenever they wander a little too far!
While cheetahs are famously known as a mostly solitary species, these 4 brothers have a unique future ahead of them. Male cheetah siblings often form lifelong groups known as ‘coalitions’. This means the boys will stick together, traveling, hunting, and looking out for one another. Forever. Aww!
A win for wildlife at the San Diego Zoo

Beyond just being incredibly cute, this birth is a major win for wildlife conservation. Cheetahs are currently listed as a vulnerable species, and these brothers are a vital part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan. By boosting genetic diversity, they’re helping to ensure a healthy, thriving future for cheetah populations worldwide.
Ready for some serious cuteness? It might be time to head over to the San Diego Zoo and check out these cuties – and don’t forget about the elephants!
