Is it us, or is allergy season getting longer each year?
With life feeling sightly overwhelming we thought about all the San Diegans who might want to find a comfortable spot to have a good cry and feel like the main characters they are. So here is our list of 8 fantastic spots to shed a tear, along with song suggestions to really let the waterworks flow.
1. Torrey Pines Gliderport
Gliderport has one of the most beautiful views in all of SoCal. It’s so gorgeous you’ll forget all about your ex-talking stage. This La Jolla gem is so picturesque you’ll feel like the protagonist in a coming-of-age or romcom, but no matter the genre, remember this- You are the protagonist.
Song: Two Birds, Regina Spektor
Location: 2800 Torrey Pines Scenic Dr, La Jolla, CA 92037
2. Geisel Library
You can thank architect William Pereira for this aesthetic yet moody spot to comfortably shed a tear. This 1968 Brutalist building is an iconic part of San Diego and the perfect place to cry ’till the tears run dry. Geisel Library is open from 7:30 am-10 pm on weekdays and 10 am-10 pm on weekends. Pro tip: the 8th floor is our favorite place to…umm chop onions?
Song: Brutal, Olivia Rodrigo
Location: 9500 Gilman Dr, La Jolla, CA 92093
3. Birch Aquarium
Remember that pivotal scene in the 2004 movie Closer? Well, we can’t promise you’ll meet Julia Roberts or Clive Owens here, but it does make for an excellent spot to dramatically shed a tear. Birch Aquarium is one of the greatest aquariums in the country, and you deserve only the best. You can take in the beauty of the more than 5,000 species in the aquarium and if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, you can even dive (up to your elbows) into living tide pools at the Preuss Tide Pool Plaza.
Song: Water under the Bridge, Adele
Location: 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla, CA 92037
4. Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden
This gorgeous rose garden is actually one of the 19 gardens in popular Balboa Park. However, this happens to be a rather calm spot as most Balboa Park visitors don’t frequent this secluded gem as much. The stunning Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden displays over 1,600 roses of more than 130 stunning varieties. You can take in all this beauty and the sweet scent and either walk around or rest on the benches under the shady trees. There’s also a lovely covered rotunda area with plenty of seating and shade and a small fountain that will drown out your cries.
Song: Coming Up Roses, Keira Knightley
Location: Balboa Park Park Blvd and Village Pl San Diego, CA 92101
5. Bird Park
Bird Park is a lovely and best of all, secluded spot in North Park. The vast green space is the ideal spot to lay down and watch the beautiful San Diego skies as you think about whatever’s on your mind. The park is calm and has plenty of parking, so you can easily make a picnic out of it and take in the beautiful views!
Location: Upas St And 28th St
6. The parking lot outside Bali Hai
Sometimes there’s no better place to let it all out than your car. The problem is where to park? Well, this scenic yet private spot is one of our favorites. The parking right outside of Bali Hai on Shelter Island has a great view of downtown and it’s right next to a delicious restaurant.
Pro tip: Pick up an order of their Coconut Shrimp or Lobster Tacos and turn up the stereo.
Song: Drivers License, Olivia Rodrigo
Location: 2230 Shelter Island Dr, San Diego, CA 92106
7. Beacon’s Beach
Beacon’s Beach in Encinitas is a secluded beach with most of its visitors being surfers, so feel free to cry as you like because they’re in the water anyways! Just be aware that the beaches in this area are narrow during high tides.
Song: Sandcastles, Beyoncé
Location: 948 Neptune Avenue Encinitas, CA 92024
8. Sunset Cliffs
Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma is one of the most unique spots in San Diego. It is best to visit the beach and caves during low tide. You’ll find parking at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Ladera Street, where a stairwell leads to the rocky shores. If you time your visit right, you’ll be able to see the tide pools.
Song: Please Don’t Fall In Love, Cliff Richard
Location: 1253 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. San Diego, CA 92107
