Ready for a paw-some day at the beach? On Sunday, September 13, 2026, the sandy shores of Del Mar Dog Beach – North will transform into a surfer’s paradise – but not the human kind! The highly anticipated Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon returns! This family-friendly event promises a day of sun, surf, and smiles, all for a great cause.
Surfing dogs & cuteness overload, all for a good cause

Organized to benefit the orphan pets at the Helen Woodward Animal Center, the event brings together the community to watch 70 incredibly talented surfing dogs! They all compete for the coveted title of Top Surf Dog. The furry competitors will hit the waves in 10-minute heats categorized by weight class, ranging from extra-small to extra-large. Judges will score the pups on the length of their ride, wave size, and exciting tricks (yes, barking is considered a plus). Winners in each division will advance to the Best in Surf finals.
This year’s Surf-A-Thon also features a freestyle surf contest. Doggies can share a board with other furry friends in the “Canine Freestyle” division, or catch waves with their favorite humans in “Peeps & Pups.” Extra points will be awarded for creativity, tandem tricks, and costumes.
Speaking of costumes – the fun isn’t just happening in the water. Pups can also strut their stuff on stage for the Canine Costume Contest, fully embracing this year’s theme: Sunny San Diego.
How to attend this fantastic event

You can attend this fun beach day entirely for free, but donations are warmly encouraged to support the animal center. Beyond the main events, attendees can explore vendor booths, enjoy great music, and soak up the late summer vibes. Whether you’re cheering on the 4-legged athletes or raising vital funds, we can’t think of a better Sunday activity!
