ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a new authorization that U.S. passport holders will soon need to enter most European countries – something to keep in mind when planning your travel to Europe. It works similarly to ESTA, the system most European citizens use to visit the U.S.
But here’s some good news! The European Union has postponed the requirement, at least until the second half of 2025. So if a European getaway is on your mind…there’s no time like the present!
Originally announced in 2016, ETIAS has faced multiple delays, pushing back its implementation for various reasons.
When will ETIAS go into effect?
The deadline is still unclear, but we know we’re free to travel until July with just a valid passport. U.S. passport holders may not need to worry about obtaining an ETIAS until possibly 2026, but this hasn’t been confirmed yet.
For which countries do I need an ETIAS when I travel to Europe?
All EU Schengen member states – and more – will require ETIAS. This includes:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Croatia
- Czech Republic
- Denmark
- Estonia
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Greece
- Hungary

- Latvia
- Liechtenstein
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
