San Diego’s incredible year-round weather makes it the perfect place to grow fresh produce. With over 5,000 farmers calling the county home, our region produces an abundance of amazing crops, including avocados and nursery plants, for which we’re the nation’s top producer. And the best news? We can enjoy this local bounty from the vibrant farmers markets scattered throughout the city. Here are some of our favorites:
1. Hillcrest Farmers Market
There isn’t one local who hasn’t browsed this large market, with over 175 vendors. Every Sunday morning, you can find anything you can possibly look for, right here. The market is proud to say most of its vendors grow and sell natural produce, with no pesticides. Besides great fresh food, you can find a lot more at this popular spot. There’s plenty of ready to eat food – with an emphasis on international cuisine -, live music, flowers, clothes and the cutest gifts.
*the market is currently on University Ave. (between Herbert St. & Park Blvd.), temporarily.
2. La Jolla Open Aire Market
This place serves the community on every Sunday, offering great local products from over 120 vendors. But that’s not even why it makes our top farmers markets – it’s because all profits go towards public school La Jolla Elementary. Here, you’ll find artisanal goods, fresh produce, and of course, an amazing food court. It’s the perfect spot to get your spices, your sourdough bread, or crazy good kombucha, before heading for brunch at the food court.
Location: 7335 Girard Ave. in La Jolla
3. Little Italy Mercato
You can enjoy this popular farmers markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with the latter one being one of the largest in the city – it spreads over six city blocks. It’s a great place to find the best olive oil, eggs, nuts, pretty plants, tasty bread, and of course…fresh pasta! Don’t forget to check out the arts and crafts by local artists, located on the Piazza della Famiglia.
Location: Sat market – West Date Street from west of Kettner Blvd to Front Street ; Wednesday market – Kettner Blvd to State Street
4. North Park Farmers Market
Head here on Thursday afternoons for good quality meats, eggs, cheeses and fresh fish. You can also find art items, hot foods from all over the world, and a couple of great hot sauces. Kids won’t get bored as there are fun activities planned, and you’ll even encounter some local live music.
Location: 3000 North Park Way
5. City Heights Farmers Market
If you’re looking for a smaller market that’s really easy to explore in depth, this may be the one for you. It’s an up and coming space, with less vendors than the others, but with a great offer. Fresh and organic produce is sold at reasonable prices, but you can also find amazing options for ready to eat foods from all over the world. Locals love the samosas and pupusas here! There are also activities for kids, an even a wellness booth for adults. It’s open every week day.
Location: 4325 Wightman
6. Ocean Beach Farmers Market
Another certified market, another fabulous opportunity to get fresh produce every Wednesday. Locals also enjoy the fresh juices they can find here, the baked goods, and delicious desserts. Grab some of their great ready to eat foods, and head towards the pier to catch the sunset.
