Happy new year! Kick off 2026 by hitting the trails and starting the year strong in the great outdoors. California State Parks welcomes hikers of all ages to its annual First Day Hikes on January 1, 2026. As California marks the 175th anniversary of statehood, the park system will host more than 80 free, guided hikes across 60+ of the state’s most diverse and iconic parks. These hikes aim to inspire a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors, and with nature proven to boost mood and well-being, there’s no better way to welcome the new year!

Free guided hikes – highlights

Below, find just a couple of the most popular hikes in and around San Diego:
- Van Damme State Park (Mendocino): A unique Mushroom Identification Hike led by a mycologist starts at 10 AM. Expect a 1.5-mile walk focused on the diverse fungi of the North Coast.
- Cardiff State Beach: This park is hosting its first “Polar Bear Plunge” for those looking to start the year with a cold ocean submerge.
- The Forest of Nisene Marks (Aptos): A 4-mile historical trek to the site of the old Loma Prieta town. It begins at 9 AM.
- Tule Elk State Natural Reserve: For those who prefer wheels to walking, the park is offering a guided Auto Safari to view the herd of endemic Tule Elk.
- Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve: Guided 1.5-mile hikes are scheduled for both 9 AM and 2 PM along the iconic coast.
