Let’s face it – we’re incredibly lucky. San Diego is home to world-class art, science, and history museums, and you don’t even always have to pay top dollar to experience them. Throughout August, several of our best cultural institutions drop their admission fees on specific days. If you’re a local looking to explore on a budget, here’s your complete guide to free museum days this month.
Free Museum Days for everyone
These museums offer free admission to the general public on specific days in August – no residency required:
- Women’s Museum of California: 1st Saturday (August 1)
- Oceanside Museum of Art: 1st Sunday (August 2) from 11 AM to 5 PM, and 1st Friday (August 7) from 5 PM to 8 PM.
- Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego: 2nd Sunday (August 9) and 3rd Thursday (August 20).
- San Diego Chinese Historical Museum: 2nd Sunday (August 9).
- San Diego Museum of Art: 2nd Thursday (August 13).
Balboa Park Resident Free Tuesdays
If you’re a San Diego County resident, local college student, or active-duty military, Balboa Park’s rotating ‘Resident Free Tuesdays’ are one of the city’s best perks. Just bring your local ID!
First Tuesday (August 4)
- Fleet Science Center: Access to regular exhibit galleries.
- San Diego Natural History Museum (The NAT): Free general admission (films not included).
- San Diego Model Railroad Museum
Second Tuesday (August 11)
- Comic-Con Museum
- San Diego Air & Space Museum: Valid for general admission, excludes special exhibitions.

Donation-based spots: The Bonita Museum & Cultural Center and the Nautical History Gallery & Museum operate on a “pay as much or as little as you choose” basis.
