Halloween is an uncanny time of year. As the crisp fall air blows colorful leaves from the trees, a certain spookiness comes to San Diego. Different cultures celebrate in different ways as the days draw in and the nights grow longer and this October Candlelight is on hand to make the season even more special.
Something wicked this way comes! As the spooky season rolls into town, so will four Candlelight concerts celebrating three different eerie events. This year, we have Friday 13, and The Joan B Kroc Theatre will host a concert complete with an aerial performance. Then, Candlelight Halloween will mark the occasion with two concerts at CHAPEL and Mount Helix Park. Finally, the season will round off with a Día De Los Muertos concert at Adams Avenue Theatre.

Candlelight: Friday the 13th Special Featuring Aerialists
An extraordinary celebration of Friday 13th is coming to the Joan B Kroc Theatre. We’re so lucky that this year October 13th falls on a Friday, making this super spooky season even more unique.
As aerialists from In The Wings create a spectacular display, the talented Range Ensemble String Quartet will play well-known tracks from scary movies like ‘Tubular Bells’ from The Exorcist, and the prelude from Psycho. Imagine hair-raising tracks like ‘Lullaby’ from Pan’s Labyrinth played on strings as people twirl, spin and fly across the stage.
Candlelight Open Air: A Haunted Evening of Halloween Classics
Mount Helix Park sits beacon-like as one of San Diego’s highest natural spots. Offering a 360-degree view of the city, this majestic spot is the perfect place for a Halloween Candlelight concert. We’re in luck because this otherworldly location will host a couple of soul-stirring open-air concerts this October. Hopefully, it won’t stir too many souls!
As the bright lights of the city glow below, hundreds of candles will glow on this secluded hilltop as the Range Ensemble string quartet plays haunting tunes. Expect to hear songs like Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and the theme from The Addams Family, creating the most magical atmosphere at one of San Diego’s most iconic landmarks.
Candlelight Halloween: A Spooky Evening of Classical Compositions
Another creepy Candlelight concert will take place in San Diego’s ornate CHAPEL this October. It once served as a place of worship for sailors and this grand space will be illuminated as Range Ensemble performs the spookiest of songs.
The sounds of ‘This is Halloween’ from The Nightmare Before Christmas, the theme from Beetlejuice by Danny Elfman, and the theme from Psycho will ring out across the chapel. Plus, nostalgic tunes like ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and ‘Time Warp’ from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Candlelight: Día De Los Muertos – Celebrating the Day of the Dead
As November beckons, a special, candlelit celebration of Día De Los Muertos is coming to Adams Avenue Theater. This colorful celebration of life and death mixes the macabre with bold and vibrant displays. So, paint your face, dress up, and get ready for an experience you certainly won’t forget in a hurry!
The Adelaide Pilar Band will fill the vast Adams Avenue Theatre with a mixture of traditional Mexican folk songs and more modern tunes. You can expect to hear the likes of ‘La Llorona’ and ‘La Bruja’, but also ‘Recuérdame’ from Disney Pixar’s Coco and ‘Paloma Negra’ by Chavela Vargas. Complete with a vocalist, bassist, violinist, and guitarist, this quartet certainly knows how to put on a show.
From Friday 13th to Halloween and Día De Los Muertos, there’s a lot to celebrate this year and Candlelight is on hand to provide 65 minutes of the most enchanting entertainment. Allow yourself to be transfixed by the glow of candles as talented performers bring you the very best of this spectral season. Bring family, friends or go alone, if you dare!
