Earning a 6-figure salary has long been the gold standard of financial success and a major life milestone…at least that’s what we’ve been told. But if you live in San Diego, you likely already know that $100,000 doesn’t quite pack the punch it used to. A recent study by ConsumerAffairs analyzed the true take-home value of a $100K salary across the 100 largest U.S. cities. It factored in federal, state, and local taxes, plus the regional cost of living.
How far does $100K stretch in San Diego?

San Diego landed near the bottom of the pack, ranking 89th overall.
While a $100K gross income sounds fantastic on paper, steep housing costs, utilities, and California’s state income taxes quickly eat away at that number. By the time taxes and regional price parity are applied, a 6-figure salary in San Diego effectively shrinks. Hence, residents are left with far less purchasing power than the national average.
If you make $100K in San Diego, you’re likely to go home with $66,119.
Are San Diegans getting the worst deal in California?
San Diego certainly isn’t alone in this squeeze. California cities heavily dominate the bottom of the list. San Francisco and Oakland tied for dead last (100th). A bit further north, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Irvine, Long Beach, and Santa Ana all tied for the 94th spot, leaving earners with about $63,829 in true value.
San Jose also sits right next to San Diego in the bottom 10. If you’re looking for the best bang for your buck within the Golden State, Fresno is your best bet. It ranks highest in California at nr. 73, with an adjusted post-tax salary of $70,887.
So, where does a 6-figure salary actually feel like wealth?
If you’re looking to maximize your paycheck, you might want to look toward the Lone Star State. Thanks to zero state income tax and a highly affordable cost of living (especially in housing), Texas took 4 out of the top 5 spots nationwide:
- Laredo, TX (adjusted value: $89,864)
- El Paso, TX ($87,473)
- Lubbock, TX ($86,800)
- Corpus Christi, TX ($86,419)
- Memphis, TN ($85,391)
Rounding out the top 10 are cities like San Antonio, New Orleans, Tulsa, Wichita, and Fort Wayne.
For San Diegans, the reality is clear: living in America’s Finest City comes with the well-known sunshine tax. While earning $100K is still a great achievement (don’t let anyone tell you any different!), living comfortably here requires a lot more budgeting and financial planning. Or…head to the beach, take in the sunset, and forget all about it.
