Known for its high-flying maneuvers, distinctive masks, and flair, Lucha Libre is a beloved form of wrestling with nearly 200 years of history. But there’s much more to La Lucha than a wrestling match. We don’t want to give anything away, but let’s just say things might get a little adventurous.
La Lucha was created by multi award-winning artist David Israel Reynoso. The show is the world premiere experience from his theatrical company Optika Moderna. La Lucha uses all the spectacle and mystery of Lucha Libre to explore themes such as gender constructs surrounding masculinity, complex family and romantic dynamics, and more.
Inspired by his Mexican heritage and love for Lucha Libre, the world Reynoso has created is an epic adventure that will explode expectations and change your perceptions.
Reynoso founded Optika Moderna as a way to tell thoughtful narratives from unique perspectives. Past projects like Portaleza, Las Quinceañeras, and Waking La Llorona. Each production has pushed the boundaries of immersive storytelling.
La Lucha is being presented by two world-famous San Diego arts companies, La Jolla Playhouse and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, with the show taking place at the museum (1100 Kettner Blvd).
Critics have been praising the experience’s unique narrative and emotional themes. The LA Times said that La Lucha “Invites discussion [as] the audience piece together narratives,” and that it “Explores the mysteries of the heart.”
David Israel Reynoso has created many masterpieces and this show is sure to be no exception, so grab your tickets today!
