Lately, taco lovers in San Diego received some sad news. One of the most sacred culinary institutions, Las Cuatro Milpas, has been sold.
Why is this Mexican spot so famous?
This little eatery holds a history as rich as its famous tamales, stretching back nearly a century. Petra and Nati Ancira first opened the doors back in 1933, and since then, it has been a true labor of love, passed down through multiple generations. It’s an old-school San Diego landmark, celebrated for its cash-only, stripped-down menu of home-style favorites. People love the perfectly crispy rolled tacos and savory chorizo. Oh, and the rice and beans, of course! The place, known for its no-frills attitude, was even featured on Netflix’s Taco Chronicles.
Is Las Cuatro Milpas really gone?
The legendary Barrio Logan spot, famous for its lines out the door and its authentic Mexican cooking, was the subject of a major transaction. But before panic sets in and folks mourn the loss of their favorite rolled tacos, it’s crucial to understand that the sale involved the real estate. That’s the actual physical building and property on Logan Avenue, and not the decades-old restaurant business itself. At least, that’s what we know so far from agent Voltaire Lepe.
So, what does this change in property ownership mean for the future of those freshly made tortillas? Truthfully, we don’t know. The community is understandably anxious, watching to see whether the new landlord will allow the beloved institution to continue its nearly 100-year legacy without interruption. For now, there’s hope. This sell doesn’t necessarily mean we’re saying goodbye to our favorite Mexican. Keep those fingers crossed!
