Club sandwiches, po’boys, Philly Cheesesteaks…we could go on forever. Who doesn’t love a good sandwich? It’s versatile, it’s easy, and it always hits the spot. It’s only fair that this amazing item gets its own month. August is National Sandwich Month, and to celebrate, Yelp has launched a brand-new list of the top 100 sandwich shops in the U.S. The best sandwich shop in San Diego is in it.
Franky’s Deli Warehouse in Florida claimed the top spot, celebrated for its classic subs like the signature Italian. In second place is California’s Sierra Subs and Salads, home to the popular four-meat double-decker Manwich. Rounding out the top three is the famous Tony’s Beechhurst Deli in New York, a longtime favorite for cold cut sandwiches and pressed paninis.
While San Diego didn’t make the top of the top, we’re definitely ranking high! Beyer Deli took the 12th spot in Yelp’s top, while Come On Over Cafe in Oceanside raked 15th.
Beyer Deli, the best sandwich shop in San Diego
Tucked away on Beyer Boulevard, Beyer Deli is a family-run spot known for its hearty sandwiches, fresh ingredients, and welcoming vibe. Whether you’re grabbing lunch on the go or catering for a crowd, Beyer Deli is a local favorite, and a must-visit for any sandwich lover in San Diego.
Beyond the menu of customer favorites, what really stands out is the welcoming atmosphere. Regulars say the staff remembers their names, creating a warm, home-like experience that keeps people coming back. The Italian Sub and Man Handler are definite favorites, but the shop also makes a mean Philly Cheesesteak and Reuben.
Keep in mind that Beyer Deli is a cash-only place.

Sandwich trends

While working on this brand new top, Yelp identified a couple of trends when it comes to sandwich lovers.
- Crossing borders. From Philly cheesesteaks in Texas at Gino’s Deli Stop N Buy, to Chicago-style Italian beef in Florida at Chicago Paulies, you’ll find iconic flavors served up far from their hometowns.
- Banh mi love. This Vietnamese classic, layered with pickled veggies, pate, pork, deli meats, cilantro, and jalapeños on a soft roll, remains a Yelper favorite.
- Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free. Lighter options are increasingly in demand, and sandwich shops are stepping up.
- Unsung heroes. Subs, hoagies, grinders, po’boys, heroes. Whatever you call them, Americans have countless nicknames for sandwiches on a roll.
