Soccer fans have just lived through an amazing moment in sports history this week. The San Diego Wave (our local women’s pro team) just flew to Florida and won a brand-new, fast-paced tournament called the World Sevens. And if you’re not a fan yet…maybe this is your sign!
Here is the lowdown on what happened, why it was fun to watch, and what it means for the team.
What is World Sevens?
Think of this tournament as the arcade mode of professional soccer. Instead of the usual game (11 vs. 11), this is 7 vs. 7. The pitch is also atypical – half the size of a standard one. The matches are short, at only two 15-minute halves. And last but not least, every single game needs to have a winner. If it’s a tie, it’s settled right then and there.
The big win
On Sunday, December 7, 2025, the Wave played the championship final against a strong team from Mexico called Club Tigres. The Wave won definitively with a score of 3-0.
-
Makenzy Robbe scored the first goal early in the game.
-
Adriana Leon was on fire, scoring 2 goals in the second half to seal the deal.
The defense was just as good as the offense. Goalkeeper DiDi Haračić blocked everything that came her way. She won the “Golden Glove” award for being the best goalie in the tournament!
Why is this a big deal?
-
Making history – This was the first-ever North American version of this tournament. San Diego will always be the first name on the trophy.
-
A perfect score – The team didn’t lose a single game all tournament. They scored 15 goals in total and only let the other teams score 3 times.
-
The reward – This wasn’t just for bragging rights. The tournament had a massive prize pot. By winning, the Wave took home $2 million. Half of that money goes directly to the players, and the other half goes to the club.
