Have you been scrolling through photos of adoptable pets, wondering if that cute face would actually fit into your lifestyle? Understandable – it’s a big decision. We all worry about the what-ifs. If fear of commitment is holding you back from meeting your new best friend, we have great news. The San Diego Humane Society has just launched ‘The Adoption Trial Program’.
How does it work?

This new program bridges the gap between fostering and adopting. It’s designed for people who want to adopt, but need a little reassurance that it’s the right match before signing the final papers. Sounds like you?
Here’s how it works. Instead of signing up as a foster volunteer, you act as a “trial adopter.” You pick out a specific adult animal (7 months or older) that you’re interested in and take them home. You then have up to 14 days to see how things go.
During those two weeks, you get to see the pet’s personality shine outside of the shelter environment. Does it work out? Great! You make it official. If not, you can bring them back, no hard feelings.
What we love most about this program:
- No pressure: You don’t pay the adoption fee or finalize the paperwork until after the trial period.
- It helps the animals: Even if you don’t end up adopting, the pet gets a much-needed break from the stressful shelter environment. Plus, the Humane Society learns valuable info about how that pet acts in a real home.
- It helps with space: Right now, SDHS is caring for over 1,550 animals. They are seeing record numbers of adult dogs. Every pet that goes into a trial home opens up a kennel for another animal in need, even if just for a while.
Ready to find your match?

If you live within the San Diego Humane Society’s jurisdiction, you are eligible to participate.
Simply visit the campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside, or San Diego. They are open for walk-ins Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM to 5 PM. You can see who’s waiting for a home here.
If eventually you’re ready to adopt, know that pets come spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. Go take a test run…you might just find the love of your life!
