Mexican food is an absolute institution in this city. Our location right by the border blessed us with plenty of options for delicious tacos, Mexican seafood, and even encouraged us to make our own wonderful creation: the California Burrito. Times may change, and generation after generation spends their evening in different spots…but Gaslamp remains a classic, and grabbing a taco right after is a San Diego tradition that we don’t see going away soon. And so the question arises – where are the best tacos in Downtown San Diego?
The Taco Stand
Founded by Tijuana natives Aram and Julian, The Taco Stand began in San Diego in 2013, inspired by Baja’s street tacos. There’s always a line, and you’d better make up your mind while you’re in it – check the menu on the wall above. Many people here come for their California Burrito, which to be honest…it’s to die for. But their tacos are definitely worth a shot, too. Go with a classic like carne asada or al pastor, or more regional, with a grilled pescado or Baja. Everything comes with freshly made tortillas. Grab your favorite salsa at the back of the store, a cold drink from the fridge, and enjoy.
Tacos El Gordo
El Gordo may be a chain, but don’t let that fool you. No place has a line around the block for no reason at all. Generally, opinions are split here – some locals think they can find cheaper and better, while some stay loyal to this institution. We gotta say, we’re the latter. The system here is simple. Once you enter, you get in line either for adobada (spicy pork – our favorites), asada, or cabeza. Their loaded fries are also great, if you have a big appetite. Yes, the tacos are a little bit pricier than other locations, but we think that sometimes…only El Gordo hits the spot.
Los Chuchys
Out of the 3 options, Los Chuchys is probably the one that seems most authentic. The corn tortilla is the first sign, as some purists may say. What you can find here and not at the other spots we visited is birria tacos, or queso birria tacos – so if you’re looking for a messy delight, this may be the perfect spot. Tacos here are a little bit heavier than the rest, so keep that in mind. Overall, a great option for the area, and an even better one for when you don’t want to wait in (an even longer) line.
In conclusion? It’s pretty hard to have bad tacos in Downtown San Diego, and the rest of the world knows it. We hear it from tourists all the time. But based on this quick walk and analysis, we’ll probably go with the adobada at El Gordo, as the meat packed loads of flavor. Head to our socials if you wanna share your thoughts!
