Waymo, the autonomous driving technology company owned by Alphabet Inc., has confirmed its plan to launch its robotaxi service in San Diego. This initiative is part of a broader geographical expansion that includes two other cities: Las Vegas and Detroit. The company is currently looking at a public launch in San Diego in 2026.
How does this work?
The rollout in San Diego (and everywhere else) follows a period of preparatory operations. Waymo cars, which have been operating with safety drivers, have been observed in various city neighborhoods throughout this year. These activities are designed to map routes, collect all kinds of data, and ensure the company’s autonomous system is trained for the local traffic and environmental conditions. Basically – the system’s getting ready for the city.
The company stated that preparations are underway. They’re currently focusing on deepening local partnerships, training first responders, and completing all required regulatory approvals with California authorities. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria also commented on the development. She noted that the city is welcoming the technology as a means to explore how to make transportation “more accessible, more sustainable, and more connected.”
What will these cars look like?

Upon launch, the San Diego fleet is expected to feature a mix of vehicles. These will include all-electric Jaguar I-PACE SUVs. You’ll also see the newer Zeekr RT models, a vehicle specifically designed for autonomous ride-hailing. It’s equipped with Waymo’s latest self-driving hardware.
The addition of San Diego marks a significant step in Waymo’s expansion strategy, which currently includes commercial operations in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. There are more news when it comes to transport in America’s Finest City, such as a brand-new charter bus that connects San Diego to Los Angeles. More about that here.
