1. Big Kitchen Cafe
At Big Kitchen, you’ll always find locals enjoying their meal. This little spot has loads of charm and personality, and serves real, home-made simple food. The menu features clients’ “favorites” – so if you’re not sure what to go for, just choose one of these! Alternatively, get creative with a delicious omelette. People also love this spot for its hospitality, where people feel like family when they walk in. You’ll notice the warm personal touches right away, like customers’ photos all over the walls! Keep in mind this spot is cash only.
2. Harry’s Coffee Shop
La Jolla’s oldest family-owned restaurant is also a locals’ favorite when it comes to simple and delicious breakfast spots. Pancakes are a popular choice here, and so are the hash browns – you get those with their amazing omelettes, or simply grab some as a side. However, the star of the menu is the famous B.W. Benny, a golden brown waffle with bacons – inside and on top! – grilled ham, poached eggs and hollandaise.
3. Madi
Madi is technically a brunch spot, but they do serve it every day…so who’s to say it’s not the perfect breakfast spot? People love the G.O.A.T., a breakfast sandwich with ham, egg, Sonoma goat cheese, apricot habanero jam, and peperry arugula…all on rustic bread. Simple, yet delicious. If you’re looking for something different, try their White Bean Shakshuka. Pair it will with their in-house brewed coffee.
4. Kono’s Cafe
If breakfast burritos with a view of the sea sounds like your ideal scenario…Kono’s is the place for you. Some even call their burritos the best in town! The Egg Burrito nr. 3 is a popular choice, with bacon, potatoes, cheese and pica salsa. If you love some spice with your breakfast, go for nr. 5 – it has jalapenos, and delicious chorizo.
5. Snooze, an A.M. Eatery
Early risers, this is the breakfast restaurant for you. The great news is that it comes with something for everyone, too. Sweet tooth? Don’t miss the Pineapple Upside-down Pancake. Prefer savory? Try their Ham Benedict IIIrd, a signature English muffin topped with ham, poached cage-free eggs and a house-made smoked cheddar hollandaise. Pair it with a coffee, or a fresh orange juice.
