If the US were a giant PTA meeting, California would be the parent who brings the best snacks and throws the most epic birthday parties. But we’re definitely not great at…some other stuff. At least, that’s according to a new study by WalletHub, analyzing the “Best & Worst States to Raise a Family” in 2025.
Is California a good state to raise a family?

In short…it doesn’t seem like. The Golden State didn’t even crack the top 25, landing at a mediocre 29th spot.
However, we did secure one very specific gold medal: Number 1 in Family Fun!
The good news? We know how to party! Between our world-class theme parks, endless coastline, national parks, and perfect weather, keeping the kids entertained here is practically a professional sport. We beat out every other state in this category.
The bad news? While we ace the weekends, the Monday-through-Friday grind of raising a family is where the struggle gets real. Here’s where we fall short:
- Socio-economics: we ranked 48th, likely dragged down by the wealth gap and cost of living.
- Health & Safety: a worrying 42nd place.
- Education & Child Care: we sat at 33rd, and we blame the childcare costs.
- Affordability: we ranked dead last (50th) for housing affordability, which probably shocks absolutely no one. Overall, we’re 19th for general affordability.
Who took the crown?

The reliable states swept the podium (okay, but do they have fun?!). Massachusetts took first place, boasting top scores in education and safety. Minnesota came second, and North Dakota third. They might have harsh winters, but apparently, they offer the stability that California trades for sunshine.
The worst state to raise a family, according to this study, is New Mexico. It’s closesly followed by West Virginia and Mississippi.
The verdict? California is essentially the ‘cool auntie’ of the US – there for a good time, but maybe a little chaotic (or expensive?) for the day-to-day business of growing up. Click here for the full study.
