Located in Southern California’s San Jacinto Mountains is Idyllwild, a peaceful retreat known for its pine-scented air, artistic soul, and the best political figure, ever. It’s a golden retriever named Mayor Max! This cozy town is around 5,000 feet above sea level, which means it offers stunning scenery, rich history, and a unique sense of community. Among others, Idyllwild mostly attracts nature lovers and creatives.
Though small and unincorporated, Idyllwild’s charm is anything but modest. It’s surrounded by the protected San Jacinto Forest, with its dense woodlands, rugged hiking, and biking paths. Its reputation as a hidden gem recently earned it a spot on World Atlas’s list of the best places to live in Southern California in 2025. This spot is praised for its strong community spirit and outdoor lifestyle.
A look back in time
Long before Idyllwild became a mountain hideaway, the region was home to the Cahuilla people. It wasn’t until the late 1800s, with the arrival of settlers and improved access via mountain roads, that it began evolving into a beloved summer getaway. Nowadays, Idyllwild also became an artistic haven, known for hosting festivals and shooting films at its scenic surroundings.
Meet the fur Mayors
One of Idyllwild’s most heartwarming quirks is its dog mayors. Since the town doesn’t have a formal city government, a local animal rescue group launched a pet mayoral election in 2012 as a fundraiser. That election led to the rise of Max the golden retriever. He charmed the town during his brief term – unfortunately, he passed after 9 months in office.
Following Max I’s passing, Max II stepped into paw-litics, winning hearts for nearly a decade. The legacy continues today with Max III, who makes appearances at local events, greeting residents and spreading joy with his furry presence.
Like any proper mayor, Mayor Max’s platform is based on an official oath of office:
“I, Max, do swear on my food bowl to faithfully execute my duties as Mayor of Idyllwild. I am proud to take this oath, knowing that my human campaign manager went above and beyond to finance this election campaign. Just as it is in Chicago and all of New Jersey, I am proud that also in Idyllwild money can, to contradict the Beatles, buy me both love and public office. I will be a role model as Mayor for all canines, felines and humines, so help me ARF!”
Outdoors and nearby nature

With its prime mountain setting, Idyllwild is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Here, you’ll find trails of all levels, from gentle forest paths to challenging climbs. The region also welcomes rock climbers, cyclists, horseback riders, and campers seeking a quiet retreat.
The Arts Scene
Despite its remote feel, Idyllwild is rich in culture. Art galleries, studios, and music venues are to be found all around town, supported by local institutions like the Idyllwild Arts Academy and the Art Alliance of Idyllwild. The town’s creative energy is deep into its identity, offering visitors and locals alike a taste of mountain-town culture with an artistic edge.
Getting There
Just about 113 miles from San Diego, Idyllwild makes for a perfect weekend escape. Each season paints the town in a new light. Enjoy snowy winters and blooming springs or sunny summers and colorful autumn leaves.
