Put on your finest citrusy outfit and mark your calendars, because one of California’s most exciting street fairs is back! It’s time to celebrate Chula Vista’s sweet (and sour) legacy as the former “Lemon Capital of the World.”
Why was Chula Vista the ‘Lemon Capital of the World?’
Chula Vista earned the unofficial title of “Lemon Capital of the World” in the early 20th century thanks to the perfect storm of climate and infrastructure. The area had a unique microclimate, with mild winters and a coastal influence from the San Diego Bay. However, the true catalyst for the agricultural boom was the completion of the Sweetwater Dam in 1888, which provided the region with a reliable water supply. By the 1920s, the city was home to thousands of acres of lemon groves, and local packing houses were shipping massive harvests of Chula Vista lemons all across the United States.
Welcome to the Lemon Festival!

While the lemon groves of the past may be gone, the city’s roots are still celebrated. This year, Downtown Chula Vista’s Third Avenue will completely transform into a lemon-filled oasis, perfect for the whole family. Here’s what to expect:
- Live music: Enjoy local talent across 2 different stages of live music.
- A lemon cook-off competition: A fun competition to see who can craft the best lemon-infused creations.
- The kids zone: Plenty of fun, games, and activities to keep the little ones entertained.
- Sip & shop: Browse unique finds from local arts and crafts vendors, grab a bite from fantastic food stands, or cool off in the wine and beer garden.
- Cool photo ops: Snap some pictures in your brightest lemon attire at the various photo stations set up along the avenue.
