Sunset Cliffs is already one of San Diego’s most iconic spots to end the day, but there’s a hidden layer to the magic – and even most locals don’t know it exists. Hidden along the coastal cliffs, entirely free, pop-up DJ sets are serving as a literal soundtrack to the sunset.

Here’s the catch: there’s no official schedule.
To keep the crowds manageable and the vibe authentic, these sets are truly hidden. The DJs usually only announce their presence on social media just hours (or days) before the set. They happen a few times a month (sometimes rotating up to the Torrey Pines Gliderport), but if you find yourself at Sunset Cliffs on a Friday after 5 PM, there’s a good chance you’ll catch one.
How to find the secret sets
- Parking: Head to Ladera Street. You can look for street parking here, or grab a spot in the nearby parking lot if it isn’t full.
- The trail: Walk into the parking lot and head all the way to the end. You’ll see multiple dirt paths, but you want to look for the trail in the corner of the lot heading directly toward the ocean.
- Follow the beats: Walk about 2 minutes along the trail and look down toward the bluffs. If a set is happening, you won’t just hear the music – you’ll see a steady stream of people walking that way.
What’s the vibe?
You have 2 choices once you find the spot. If you want a relaxed evening, treat it like a picnic. Bring chairs, blankets, and your favorite snacks, and set up on the bluffs above. You’ll get ocean views, a gorgeous sunset, and great music. If you want to feel the energy, walk down the trail to where the booth is set up.
The golden rule: protect the Sunset Cliffs
These events are a massive privilege, and keeping them alive means treating the location with respect. Sunset Cliffs is a stunning but fragile ecosystem. Coastal erosion is a serious threat, and heavy foot traffic can damage native flora and destabilize the bluffs.
- Pack it in, pack it out: This is a strict Leave No Trace zone. Bring a trash bag for your group and take absolutely everything with you when you leave.
- Stay on the established paths: Do not walk around and find out. The native plants are what hold the dirt together and prevent the cliffs from crumbling into the ocean.
- Keep your distance from the edge: The sandstone bluffs are notoriously unstable and can give way without warning. Never dance or sit right on the precipice.
- Leave the glass at home: Broken glass on the trails or the dancefloor is a quick way to ruin the night (and the environment).
