Who hasn’t heard of Jack in the Box? Most of us have grabbed a burger or taco there at some point. But did you know it’s been serving up tasty bites since February 21, 1951? It all began right here in San Diego, back when the drive-through concept wasn’t even a thing yet.
Jack in the Box, a San Diego legend

On that historic day in 1951, local businessman Robert O. Peterson opened the very first Jack in the Box at 6270 El Cajon Boulevard. While carhop drive-ins were already popular at the time, Peterson’s new concept was completely revolutionary. Jack in the Box became the first major restaurant chain to focus primarily on drive-through service. How? By pioneering the use of a 2-way intercom system.
Before this innovation, customers had to pull up to the window just to speak to the cook. The intercom allowed one driver to place an order while the car ahead picked up its food. This simple change drastically sped up service times, creating the blueprint for the modern drive-thru experience we all know and love today.
Complete with a giant (and iconic) clown head on the roof, that little hamburger stand on El Cajon Boulevard changed the fast-food industry forever.
A 75-year celebration deal
To celebrate 75 years of flavor – and fast-food history – Jack is inviting fans to join in on the festivities with a throwback-worthy deal. On Saturday, February 21, you can score a Jumbo Jack for just $0.75 with any purchase. It’s a delicious nod to the burger that started it all.
This offer will only be available on the Jack app and valid just once, and just on Feb. 21. To access the offer (and others), you need to join the Jack Pack Rewards Program at jackinthebox.com. See you where it all started!
