If ‘the mountains are calling, and you must go’, you really don’t have to go far. That’s one of the many incredible things about living in California – everything’s a stone-throw away! According to Travel + Leisure, California’s second best mountain town is actually right by us. How about a quick escape to lovely Julian?
Why is Julian a top mountain town?

Apples, apples, and…more apples – we all know that part.
But, Beyond the famous orchards, Julian is also a premier destination for stargazing and dark-sky enthusiasts. In fact, in 2021, it was officially designated as an International Dark Sky Community – one of only a few in California. That’s because the town is perched high in the Cuyamaca Mountains, and has strict lighting ordinances. On a moonless night, you can easily see the Milky Way with the naked eye. Therefore, you now know where to head to for that next supermoon or meteor shower!
As a mountain town, Julian has a lot to offer to nature enthusiasts. It’s the perfect spot to use as a basecamp for some of the most amazing hiking and wildlife viewing in the area. The Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve offers a moderately challenging hike with a massive payoff. You get to enjoy 360-degree views that stretch from the Salton Sea all the way to the Pacific Ocean!
Paradise for history lovers
Julian doesn’t just serve the nature enthusiasts – you’re a history buff, Julian’s Gold Rush heritage offers plenty to explore. The town was founded in 1870 after Fred Coleman, a formerly enslaved man, discovered gold in a local creek. You can go underground at the Eagle and High Peak Mines for a guided tour of original tunnels. Here, guides paint a picture of the grueling life of a hard-rock miner.
Looking for a more relaxed historical stroll? Check out the Julian Pioneer Museum, which houses artifacts from the town’s Victorian era. Additionally, the Julian Gold Rush Hotel – the oldest continuously operating hotel in SoCal – still welcomes guests with its 19th-century charm.
So, whether you’re trekking through the pine forests or sipping a flight at one of the local craft breweries and wineries (like Julian Beer Co. or Blue Door Winery), there’s plenty to do that has nothing to do with picking fruit. It’s easy to see why Julian is considered the second best mountain town in California!
