Grab your flip flops and maybe a nice-smelling cloth for your nose: it’s official. La Jolla Cove has just been named the nr. 1 beach in the United States in TripAdvisor’s 2026 Travelers’ Choice Awards. And yes, this is a “best-of-the-best” kinda list.
Our little slice of paradise beat out the white sands of Florida and the tropical shores of Hawaii! We always knew living in San Diego came with bragging rights, but now we have (even more) proof.
How did La Jolla win the title of ‘best beach in the U.S.’?

This wasn’t just a random pick by a travel editor. This cool title is awarded based on the quality and quantity of reviews and ratings from real travelers over the past year. Out of TripAdvisor’s 8 million listings, less than 1% achieve this milestone. Essentially – millions of visitors came, saw the sea lions, took a selfie, and raved about it. And we get why.
The jewel of San Diego
For us locals, the Cove is more than just a tourist trap. It’s a protected marine reserve with incredible snorkeling, diving, and kayaking. Sure, the parking situation is a competitive sport, and the distinct parfum of sea lion can be… an acquired taste. But the stunning sunsets and turquoise waters make it undeniable. La Jolla Cove is one of the most photographed spots in SoCal for a reason!
Who did we beat?
The competition was stiff, but La Jolla held its own. Here’s a look at the top contenders:
- La Jolla Cove, California
- Clearwater Beach, Florida
- Poipu Beach Park, Hawaii
- Waikiki Beach, Hawaii
- Lanikai Beach, Hawaii
Other notable mentions include Siesta Beach, FL coming in at #6 and our neighbor to the north, Santa Monica State Beach, coming in at #9.
On the global stage, we didn’t do too shabby either. La Jolla Cove ranked #7 in the world, with Isla Pasion in Cozumel, Mexico taking the gold.
So, next time you’re stuck in traffic, just remember: you’re driving toward the best beach in the country. Maybe celebrate with a sunset walk this weekend!
