One hour south of San Diego, as you cross the border into Baja California, is a dreamy restaurant that resembles a cliffside castle. Los Portales de Garcia, always highlighted across social media and a darling amongst the locals who have nicknamed it “El Castillo,” is a spectacular option for date night or any special occasion.

The restaurant draws inspiration from Spanish and Mexican architecture, designed like a stone castle, partially indoors with slots of outdoor seating that offer spectacular views. Wooden tables come alive with Solitllo tiles – printed in rich blues, oranges, clay tones, and more – featuring sunburst motifs inspired by the traditional terracotta tilework of Coahuila, Mexico.
What to expect at Los Portales de Garcia
The restaurant, while gorgeous, is not without a little critique. Some argue the food is good, but the beautiful atmosphere is the real reason to visit. Some warn that tips and parking are cash only, and some say that on a sweltering summer day, you may be visited by some flies. But our advice? If you’re nervous the restaurant is all hype with no substance, order a classic, easy dish, grab some cocktails, and get a cliffside table during sunset. You cannot go wrong with that.

Every day, they offer breakfast / brunch, lunch, and dinner options complete with live music and a DJ on the weekends. Choose from oysters, Aguachiles, steak, and more; all to be enjoyed while watching the waves crashing along the cliffs where the restaurant sits perched.
Not in the mood to drive back, or looking to try more of their cocktails and wines? They recently opened ‘Portal House’ at the same location, so you can stay the night at this exclusive little spot.
Give it a try and enjoy the ambiance at Los Portales de Garcia, because it’s truly like no other.
