This September, we celebrate Mexican Independence Day, and Chula Vista’s annual event is gearing up to be loud, proud, and full of great vibes. As usual, it’s also free to attend.
After a history of resounding success, Chula Vista is getting ready to host the beloved El Grito celebration once again. Taking place on Sunday, September 13, at Memorial Park, this festival is hailed as San Diego County’s most authentic Mexican Independence Day celebration. Trust us – it’s an absolute must-see.
What to expect at El Grito in Chula Vista
As with any good party, the park will come alive with culture, music, and pride. Running between 4 – 8 PM, the evening will feature live performances, including traditional mariachi bands and folklórico dancers in colorful costumes. Delicious Mexican food, local arts and crafts, and a beautiful community feeling will fill the air.
What is a ‘grito’? And what makes this one so important?
While the literal translation of “grito” is a shout or cry, its significance in Mexican history goes much deeper. Mexico observes its Independence Day on September 16th, commemorating the pivotal moment when Father Miguel Hidalgo rang his parish bells in the town of Dolores. By doing so, he incited the gathered crowd to revolt against the Spanish crown. His iconic rallying cry changed the nation’s trajectory forever. This powerful legacy is honored to this day: just before midnight on September 15th, the President of Mexico delivers a national address from the National Palace, rings the historic bells, and concludes by proudly shouting “¡Viva México!” 3 times.
