For almost 3 decades, the San Diego Zoo’s ‘Nighttime Zoo’ has been a beloved summer tradition, allowing visitors to explore the park as the sun goes down. Sadly, the Zoo recently announced that 2026 will be the final season for this iconic event. The good news? There’ll be a new summer festival debuting in 2027 – but we don’t have any details about it yet.
If you want to say a proper goodbye to a true San Diego summer staple, here’s everything you can do at the final Nighttime Zoo.
Extended hours and great entertainment
Through August 9, the Zoo is staying open until 8 PM. Special activities and performances begin at 3:30 PM, such as:
- Acrobatics and education: Catch the high-flying Bounce-a-Roo Bonanza, the Amazing Acrobats of Tanzania, and interactive lessons at Dr. Zoolittle’s Exploration Station.
- Live Music: Rock out with the Zoo’s in-house band at the Front Street Stage, relax to acoustic guitar, tap your toes to The Chameleons brass ensemble, or listen to the harmonies of The Explorers a cappella group at the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp.
The Jambo Dunia grand finale
All the entertainment leads up to the main event: Jambo Dunia! This parade down Front Street serves as the night’s grand finale. Featuring live music, dancers, acrobats, and animal puppets, the performance honors both the iconic wildlife of the African savanna and the communities that share its ecosystem.
Come hungry at the San Diego Zoo!
It wouldn’t be a summer send-off without great food. Here’s what you can expect:
- For savory lovers: Get orange chicken fries from Hua Mei Cafe, lemon pepper wings at Busy Bee Cafe, a Mexi dog from Lagoon Terrace, or a hearty BBQ pulled pork bowl at Sydney’s Grill.
- For those with a sweet tooth: Treat yourself to strawberry funnel cakes, cotton candy churros at the Ituri Hut, or a s’mores sundae in a waffle bowl from Treetops Canteen.
