It’s Lunar New Year, and the city is filled with festive events to celebrate the year of the Fire Horse. From food festivals to community gatherings, there’s so much to enjoy or maybe discover for the first time. Since San Diego hosts one of the largest Vietnamese populations in the United States, it’s only natural that we have amazing celebrations – like the Tết Festival (Lunar New Year), which is a major, free cultural event.
San Diego Lunar New Year (Tết) Festival

This festival is organized by the Vietnamese-American Youth Alliance (VAYA). It’s famous for being one of the largest free community festivals in San Diego – so you truly can’t miss it. This year, it takes place between February 20 and 22, at NTC Park at Liberty Station. There’s plenty to see, eat, and experience – but here are just some of the highlights you can expect:
- Miss Vietnam of San Diego pageant: A signature event of the festival, that takes place on Saturday evening.
- Cultural village: See replicas of traditional Vietnamese structures, historical exhibits, and enjoy all the photo ops.
- Traditional entertainment: The famous lion dancing, firecracker shows, and plenty of live music. Headliners include Thái Tài and Bảo Hân.
- Friendly competitions: A ‘Golden Voice’ singing contest, and a ‘Step Up’ dance competition.
- The card show: This is a newer addition featuring trading cards (like Pokémon or sports cards), meant to attract younger crowds.
- And of course…delicious food: You’ll find a massive array of vendors selling pho, banh mi, sugarcane juice, and incredible street food.
The year of the Fire Horse

When it comes to this Lunar Year – of the Fire Horse – you could sum up its meaning as serving high energy and action. The horse is already considered a high-energy animal, but pairing it with the fire element creates a double effect.
Astrologers often predict Fire Horse years to be volatile, fast-paced, and transformative. It’s generally considered a year for bold actions, travel, and rapid changes – this isn’t the time for quiet reflection. What does it mean for you? The energy of 2026 supports launching new projects, making big career moves, or taking risks. Just watch out for the main dangers, like burnout or conflict.
