A trip to SeaWorld is going to look a little bit different from now on. Look up – but don’t expect the usual booms and bangs. After decades of lighting up the night sky with traditional pyrotechnics, the iconic theme park is officially trading in its fireworks for a high-tech drone show.
SeaWorld chooses drones over fireworks – for now
The California Coastal Commission recently gave unanimous approval for a 1-year pilot program that will see up to 1,000 illuminated drones take flight over Mission Bay. Under the new permit, the park can host up to 110 of these 15-minute aerial performances over the next 12 months.
Why the big switch?

It all comes down to being better neighbors to the community and local wildlife. For years, residents and environmental groups have voiced concerns about the noise, smoke, and water pollution. The loud explosions have historically caused stress for neighborhood pets and wildlife – especially the sensitive bird populations nesting in nearby habitats.
Therefore….enter the drones. These reusable, autonomous flyers produce zero air or water pollution and are virtually silent. This makes them a massive win for the environment, veterans with PTSD, and our furry friends. During the shows, the drones will fly up to 660 feet in the air, creating dynamic, colorful shapes synchronized to music.
SeaWorld will closely monitor the new program for any noise, light, or wildlife impacts during the transition. While a few traditional firework shows might still happen under their overall yearly quota, the vast majority of the park’s nighttime entertainment will now be powered by drones.
It’s an interesting upgrade for Mission Bay. Visitors will still get an unforgettable nighttime spectacle, while the local ecosystem gets some peace and quiet. Welcome to the future!
