If you’re ‘just a SoCal local’ with high hopes for spring wildflowers, you may have already started dreaming of a legendary superbloom this year. After an exceptionally wet end to 2025 and start to 2026 – including record-breaking rainfall during the first 5 days of January and historic totals in Death Valley – it felt like a superbloom was practically guaranteed. Weren’t we all dusting off our hiking boots and clearing space on our camera rolls?
But hold your horses (and your hashtags). Nature, as always, may throw us a curveball.
Are we going to see a superbloom in SoCal in 2026?

Just as the wildflowers were getting ready to party, a heatwave rolled through last week, bringing record-breaking high temperatures across the region. Therefore, experts are rightfully worried. The science is simple: after germination, young wildflowers need about 6 weeks of cool, moist weather to establish themselves. We were on to a great start, but the recent ‘hot and dry’ spell threatens to cook those delicate seedlings before they can truly take off. If the heat keeps up, we might just see a bloom that fades fast rather than the rolling carpets of color.
However, don’t cancel your plans and don’t stop dreaming just yet.
The first buds are already popping up

There’s definitely hope, and we can already see it!
- In Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, scouts have spotted early desert lilies and sand verbena along Henderson Canyon Road.
- The lower elevations of Death Valley are already sporting a promising green carpet – a classic precursor to a floral explosion.
- Classic poppies struggle with the heat. But, due to recent wildfires, we’re expecting a stunning display of ‘fire followers’, like whispering bells and mariposa lilies. These only emerge after a burn followed by rain.
It’s a waiting game
So, is the 2026 superbloom happening? It’s currently a toss-up between historic rainfall and what we’ve seen during the past days. If we can get a few weeks of cooler temperatures and maybe one last drink of water, we’re back in business. Keep your fingers crossed, and keep an eye on Anza-Borrego – because the show has already started.
