Forgot to buy your favorite coffee creamer ahead of the holidays, or you’re a bottle short of sparkling wine? Finding stores open on Christmas Day can be a bit of a challenge. However, in San Diego, several pharmacies, convenience stores, and select grocery chains remain open for last-minute needs. Here’s what’s open and until what time on Thursday, December 25, 2025.
Grocery stores
While most big-name grocers like Ralphs, Walmart, and Target are closed, a few major chains in San Diego typically keep their doors open for limited hours:
- Vons has most locations open 6 AM – 3 PM
- Albertsons has select locations open from 8 AM to 4 PM
- Safeway has select locations open with adjusted hours – we recommend calling ahead if you plan to visit them
- Gelson’s is typically closed on Christmas Day – but remains open until 11 PM on Christmas Eve
Major stores confirmed to be closed on Christmas Day

Here’s what we know won’t be open on December 25:
- Big box: Target, Walmart, Costco, Sam’s Club.
- Grocery: Ralphs, Food4Less, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Aldi, Sprouts.
- Home improvement: Home Depot, Lowe’s.
Pharmacies & drugstores
Drugstores are often the most reliable option on Christmas Day for essentials. However, pharmacy counter hours may differ from the front-of-store hours.
- CVS: Most locations will be open with modified hours, typically 8 AM – 9 PM. Stores that are usually 24/7 should remain open all day.
- Walgreens: Most stores are open between 8 AM – 6 PM. 24-hour locations will remain open all day.
- Rite Aid: Most locations are expected to be closed on Christmas Day.
Convenience stores & gas stations
These are almost guaranteed to be open 24/7:
- 7-Eleven
- Circle K
- Speedway
- Chevron / Shell / Arco
