The rolling fields of North San Diego County have some of the most gorgeous flower fields in California, so beautiful that people often come here to frolic amongst the 50+ acres of giant Tecolote Ranunculus. How did we get so lucky, to be home to such breathtaking spring blooms? The Fields today are a direct result of nearly 85 years of floral cultivation – and we have mister Luther Gage to thank for that – an early settler and horticulturist who settled in the area in the early 1920’s.
These fields in Carlsbad have been open to visitors for over 60 years, and as soon as spring hits, they become a must-do activity for San Diegans.
When is peak season?
Right now! Mid-April is when the fields are in full bloom this year, with over 80 million flowers creating pure, colorful magic.
What to do at the Flower Fields?
At the Flower Fields in Carlsbad, on top of the gorgeous rolling flower fields of red, yellow, orange, and pink flowers, you can also enjoy other activities. Catch a tractor ride through the fields, grab tacos and pizzas from selected vendors, take part in a yoga class, enjoy a wine tasting, or amazing live music. Their full calendar of activities is here – pick your favorite event, and don’t miss it!
This year, a couple of brand new exhibitions will add to the experience and make your visit even more excited. For example, Glass in Flight by Alex Heveri, a breathtaking exhibit with over two dozen larger-than-life sculptures of birds and insects, crafted from glass and steel.
Best time for your visit
If you’re looking to avoid crowds, try heading to the Flower Fields in the morning or evening, and definitely avoid the weekends as many families and photographers will be battling for the best spot.
