For cocktail lovers, San Diego is simply heaven on Earth. Every lovely neighborhood has spots that truly leave you speechless when it comes to the art of mixology. From classics to crazy inventions, there’s a drink for everyone – and the scene grows day by day, with new rooftops, listening bars, and speakeasys. In that latter category, we’ve got a shining star: The Realm of the 52 Remedies, which just made the James Beard’s semifinalists list, in the ‘Outstanding Bar’ category.
A cocktail bar, or a cure?
In the heart of Convoy District, you can find a portal to the past, somewhere in plain sight. The Realm of the 52 Remedies is located within the popular Common Theory Public House. Trust us when we say that this is not merely a bar, but a whole immersive experience.
Drawing its name and inspiration from an ancient text of traditional Chinese Medicine, this speakeasy blends high-concept storytelling with exceptional hospitality.
The journey – from an apothecary to a cocktail bar
The journey into The Realm begins with a transition. You enter through a remarkable door inside the main restaurant, stepping away from the noise of the day and into a futuristic – and very white – apothecary. This “waiting room” is lined with exotic herbs, tonics, and jars, that you can smell and touch. It’s kind of a palate cleanser for all your senses, before you enter the actual bar.
The vibe & decor

Once you’re step into the The Realm, the aesthetic shifts dramatically. You go from the sterile future to a luxurious past, evoking a chic 1920s Shanghai speakeasy, with loads of Asian folklore. The space is anchored by a stunning jade bar. Above, large “clouds” are suspended from the ceiling. You’ll find private booths, with flickering lanterns, that offer next-level intimacy. Don’t miss the giant lotus flower in the middle!
The cocktails – why drinks are called ‘prescriptions’ and what to order
The menu is as curated as the interior – it’s all arranged as a journey. Every drink is a prescription for vitality and vigor, inspired by the ingredients, rituals, and myths of the Far East. The bar also adheres to a strict ethos of sustainability, where citrus and leftover herbs are repurposed into house-made syrups and tinctures. To complete the treatment, guests are often surprised with a complimentary miso cookie at the end of their visit.
When it comes to favorites, people love the Jade Empress and the Saigon Dreamer.
The Realm of the 52 Remedies, a true speakeasy bar

To preserve this carefully constructed atmosphere, The Realm has a couple of house rules. The experience is strictly seated, meaning you cannot order from the bar top or stand around. Due to the intimate size of the room and high demand, reservations are highly recommended, and limited to a 2-hour window. The venue also enforces a speakeasy etiquette, requesting indoor voices and no flash photography.
Ultimately, The Realm of the 52 Remedies is more than a hidden room, but a true tribute to culture and community. Moreover, the venue prides itself on inclusivity, with a diverse staff that reflects the demographics of the surrounding Convoy District. This spot combines theatrical design, sustainable mixology, and a deep respect for heritage, as the recipe for success – and the James Beard Awards agree.
The James Beard Awards
The James Beard Awards are also known as the Oscars of the food world. They celebrate chefs, restaurants, bakers, and bars that are shaping how and what we eat and drink. The awards shine a light not just on great cooking, but also on creativity, culture, and community.
This year’s semifinalists list also includes the incredible Tara Monsod (Animae), nominated once again in the ‘Best Chef: California’ category.
