San Diego is gearing up for the 56th annual Chicano Park Day celebration, taking place on Saturday, April 25. Held in beloved Barrio Logan, this free, family-friendly event is a local tradition that honors the rich cultural heritage of the Chicano community.
What to expect at the Chicano Park Day celebration
You can look forward to a day filled with traditional music and performances, like the spectacular Aztec Indigenous dance exhibitions. The celebration will also feature a popular park-wide lowrider car show, art workshops, local food vendors, and arts and crafts booths.
A look back in time
Beyond the festivities, the event commemorates a pivotal moment in San Diego’s civil rights history. Chicano Park was founded on April 22, 1970. Barrio Logan residents and Chicano movement activists united to peacefully protest the construction of a California Highway Patrol station on land that had been promised as a community park. Protesters stood their ground against police and bulldozers for days. Eventually, they successfully reclaimed the space.
Today, the park stands as a powerful symbol of self-determination, community empowerment, and resilience. A National Historic Landmark, Chicano Park is internationally famous for its monumental mural, which portray the history, struggles, and triumphs of the Chicano movement.
