Californians may be relaxed overall, but we’re pretty serious about wine. And it shows in the numbers. The state produces 90% of all American wine and is the fourth-largest producer among independent nations. We can proudly boast over 4,000 wineries, from boutique, small family-owned to large corporations, and international acclaim. The most famous part of the state is Wine Country, an internationally recognized spot that makes sublime wines. Here’s the good news! You can try out the best of the best at the California Wine Festival, right in the heart of Carlsbad.
California’s wine history
Wondering when and how did California start making wine? Pretty unsurprisingly, the rich viticulture history dates back to 1680s, when Spanish Jesuit missionaries planted their native vines from the Mediterranean region in their established missions. Back then, this was meant to serve religious services. Father Junípero Serra planted California’s first vineyard at Mission San Juan Capistrano.
Slowly but surely, wine production grew after the end of Prohibition. Still, the state was mostly known for its sweet and port-style wines – thus not perfect for what we call “table wine”. The public preferred French brands, so California fell behind – until the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976. At this blind tasting, specialists ranked the California wines higher than the French ones regarding Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons. This shocking result produced a shift, and contributed to a wider recognition of Californian wines.
