Grab your sweaters (or light jackets, let’s be real): the Snow Moon is rising this weekend, and you don’t wanna miss it. Signaling the beginning of February, this full moon will light up our sky on Sunday. While the moon officially reaches its peak illumination around 2 PM, don’t bother looking up then, as it will still be below the horizon. The real show starts just after sunset! Ready to be amazed?
How to see the Snow Moon from San Diego

Head out on Sunday evening and look toward the eastern horizon right as the sun is setting, around 5:20 PM. You’ll catch the moon rising, likely looking massive and golden. Why? It’s all thanks to an optical illusion that happens when the moon is near the skyline. If you miss it on Sunday, don’t worry – it’ll appear full and bright on Saturday and Monday night, too.
For the best views (and pictures), try to get away from the city lights. The best spots include Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, La Jolla cove, Torrey Pines Reserve, the Coronado Ferry Landing, Harbor Island, Shelter Island, and many more.
Why is it called a Snow Moon?
The name actually comes from Native American tribes and early settlers in the Northeast who noted that February typically brought the heaviest snowfalls of the year. While we probably won’t be having snow fights in Balboa Park anytime soon, it’s a good reminder that winter is still technically here…just not here-here.
Alternatively, some Native American tribes also called this astronomical event a Hungry Moon (due to the scarce food sources and hard hunting conditions ), or the Bear Moon (because bear cubs are born this time of year).
Spiritually, this moon is all about a reset. Occurring in the sign of Leo (moon sign, not sun sign – in case you’re wondering “isn’t Leo in August?”), it’s linked to confidence and inner fire.
Is it a supermoon?
Unlike a couple of recent full moons that we were blessed to witness, this one won’t be a supermoon. But don’t let that fool you – the spectacle will be just as incredible. So, text your friends, grab some tacos, and head to a spot with a clear view to catch the lunar magic!
