For those of us who love wandering around our beautiful city and taking it all in, nothing beats a walkable neighborhood. Living in a place where you have all you need and more nearby means less stress, less planning, less pollution…not to mention the benefits on mental and physical health. However, a lot of our wonderful Californian cities were not necessarily built with pedestrians in mind, and it can sometimes be difficult to get things done without hopping in a car. But here’s the bright side – San Diego has a couple of neighborhoods that score high on the walkability index – and one that tops almost any other in SoCal: our beloved Little Italy.
Little Italy has a 98 ‘walkability score’

With a 98 walkability score, this little San Diego gem tops other SoCal neighborhoods when it comes to this matter. The high score even grants it the term of a ‘walker’s paradise’, according to walkscore.com. It also gained a 79 score for excellent transit, and a 68 score for how bikeable it is.
This amazing neighborhood features a plethora of restaurants, cafes, shops, and cultural attractions, making it one of the most pedestrian-friendly places in Southern California.
What to do in Little Italy

While there are pockets of more Italians around the US, Little Italy remains the largest “Little Italy” in the country, stretching over 48 blocks.
There’s so much to discover in this part of San Diego! You can start your day at one of the greatest (and largest) farmers market in town. Here, on Saturdays and Wednesdays, you can find the freshest produce, straight from local farmers, such as bread, olive oil, fruits and beautiful flowers. Come hungry and get some fresh mozzarella, raclette sandwiches, oysters, or a bowl of pasta.
Don’t forget to stop by Cesarina for what most locals call “the best Italian restaurant” in the neighborhood, or Bencotto, which also features a great wine list.
If you’re looking for something special, you’re also in the right place. Kettner Boulevard is called the “Top Chef Alley” with distinctive eateries like Juniper & Ivy, Cloak & Petal, Born and Raised, Kettner Exchange, and more. All these spots are perfect for a date night, anniversary, or any other occasion.
Need a break between all the meals? Don’t miss Waterfront Park, with its scenic views, or check out the wonderful Maritime Museum.
Before you leave, stop for a pint at one of the many great breweries in the area, such as Ballast Point Brewery, or Bottlecraft Beer Shop & Tasting Room. Wine lovers should check out Pali Wine Co., or Carruth Cellars Wine Garden.
Other walkable neighborhoods in San Diego
Right under Little Italy, we find Civic-Core with a 98 score (but less to find in the area, which puts it in second place), and Harborview, with a score of 97.
