La Jolla’s culinary scene has an exciting new addition! Pepino Eatery & Bakeshop – part cafe and part bakeshop – opened its doors last winter at 7556 Fay Avenue. Blending fine-dining expertise with approachable Peruvian cuisine, this long-awaited spot has quickly become a morning and afternoon favorite.
Born out of the pandemic as a viral breakfast pop-up, Pepino spent years building a loyal following. Supported by a crowdfunding campaign and overwhelming community enthusiasm, this spot transitioned to a brick-and-mortar destination, much to the delight of local foodies.
Michelin-trained talent
At the helm, we have Chef and Owner Sebastian Becerra, a La Jolla native of Peruvian descent. Following studies at the Culinary Institute of America, Becerra worked in Michelin-starred kitchens such as San Francisco’s COI, as well as New York’s Eleven Madison Park (previously named the ‘World’s Best Restaurant’). He returned to San Diego to cook alongside Top Chef Brian Malarkey at Herb & Wood.
Executive Sous Chef Marissa Williams boasts an impressive tenure with Herb & Wood, and Herb & Sea. She brings along her advocacy for sustainable, locally sourced seafood to the Pepino kitchen.
Peruvian roots meet California casual

The menu at Pepino is a mix of Peruvian inspiration and American comfort, with seasonal, local ingredients. Moving beyond the typical breakfast and lunch fare, the restaurant introduces bold flavors to morning classics.
One of the stars of the menu is the Lomo Saltado Breakfast Burrito: a savory creation packed with the traditional flavors of the beloved Peruvian beef dish. If you want something lighter, try the fresh ceviche! For those with a sweet tooth, the bakeshop side of the operation makes delicious pastries daily.
To complement the food, Pepino offers a curated selection of wine by the glass and craft beers.
