A family (hi)story

Whenever we choose a farm to buy from – or in this case, to visit – it’s worth knowing their story and how they’ve shaped the community. And the Carlsbad Strawberry Company has a remarkable one. This family-run farm has been a cornerstone of local agriculture for nearly 100 years. The Ukegawa family first came to the U.S. in the early 1900s and have been farming ever since. By the 1950s, they established their roots in Carlsbad. Over time, rising water and labor costs, along with nearby competition, pushed them to shift focus and specialize in Albion strawberries. That change proved to be a turning point: the crop flourished at farmers markets and became the foundation of the success they enjoy today.
