With the beautiful weather we get year-round, we’re lucky to enjoy so much fresh produce in pretty much any season. And bery soon…it’s strawberry season! The U-Pick strawberry fields at Carlsbad will open shortly. Here’s everything you need to know to start planning!
Carlsbad Strawberry Company’s story
Whenever we choose a farm to buy from, or pick from in this case, it’s important to know their story and contributions to the community. And when it comes to Carlsbad Strawberry Company, there’s definitely a (hi)story to be told – this family-owned farm has been a pilar of local farming for nearly a century. The Ukegawa family immigrated to the U.S. in the 1900s, and generation after generation has been farming ever since. By the 1950s, they expanded their operations to Carlsbad. However, due to rising water and labor costs, plus nearby competition, they transitioned the farm to specialize in Albion strawberries. This produce finally thrived in farmers markets, bringing them the success they enjoy today.
The strawberry fields
Here, you can find 10 acres of farm land, waiting for you to pick your own strawberries. Each acre of land produces an average of 21 tons of strawberries a year – that’s an impressive 210 tons! The peak season is usually between February and July, depending on the weather. As we’ve had a pretty dry year, the U-Pick strawberry fields are not yet open – but their website and Instagram page says they will be very soon! Meanwhile, they already opened all of their stands, so while you cannot pick them yourself just yet, you can definitely still enjoy this sweet, sweet treat.
U-Pick experience
Once the U-Pick strawberry fields are open, they’re an absolute must-do for San Diegans. It’s only a 30-minute drive for such a great day out: perfect for a date, a family outing, an after brunch activity, or whatever else you feel like. So, how does it go? First, you’ll pay at the location for your basket, which holds about 2 lbs of strawberries. Then, you’re pretty much ready to go! Have fun, and be mindful of the plants, making sure not to step on them. There’s no time limit, so enjoy the adventure, and take a million pictures. Fields will be open from 9AM to 5PM, when whether permits – thus, no rainy days in the fields.
