If you’ve ever taken Amtrak to L.A., you already know it’s one of the best ways to travel this route. The ride is comfortable, the views are incredible, and you’ll get there in just under three hours. The scenic Pacific Surfliner ramped up service earlier this March, returning to its pre-pandemic schedule between San Diego and Los Angeles. And now, just in time for the summer rush, another round-trip train has been added on June 16, bringing the total to 12 daily trips. It’s great news for anyone heading up or down the coast this season.
New additions
Last month, two new trains have been added to the route:
- Train 593 (Northbound): Departs San Diego at 8:10 p.m., gets to L.A. at 10:57 p.m.
- Train 582 (Southbound): Leaves Los Angeles Union Station at 4:10 p.m., arrives in San Diego at 7:04 p.m
This expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to improving rail access throughout Southern California,” said Jason Jewell, Managing Director of the LOSSAN Agency. “The added trips provide more flexibility and convenience for travelers.”
These trains stop at all regular stations between San Diego and L.A., except for San Clemente Pier.
There have also been a couple more changes: Train 777 is now Train 577, terminating at Los Angeles Union Station; and Train 579 is now Train 779, terminating at San Luis Obispo Station.
The Pacific Surfliner
The Pacific Surfliner is the most traveled state-supported intercity rail route in the U.S., stretching 351 miles from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. It stops at 29 cities across six counties and runs along some of California’s most scenic coastline. On this trip, you’ll get beautiful ocean views, cliffs, and beach towns. All trains offer comfy reclining seats, free Wi-Fi, power outlets, snacks and drinks.
