Monopoly just dropped a brand-new San Diego edition, and it’s all about our city. The official reveal went down recently on the flight deck of the USS Midway (which of course landed a prime spot on the board), and it’s packed with local gems.
Who made the cut?
Instead of fighting over Boardwalk, you’ll be buying up iconic locations like Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, and the San Diego Zoo. Over 30 local spots made the list. The game is 100% San Diego-proof. For example, a rectangle called ‘Don’t disturb the seals’ replaces the classic board’s Income Tax spot.
As for the game pieces, you’ll find all the classics, such as the dog or the car.
On the board, you’ll also found spots that define San Diego. Local eateries like Broken Yolk, who’s been serving San Diegans since 1979, are on the board. You’ll also see spots like Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve and the Lions, Tigers and Bears Sanctuary in Alpine. Smaller businesses, such as Whiskers & Wine Bar, are also in.
What are the cheapest and most expensive places on the board?

Old Town and Torrey Pines are the most affordable squares on the board, located right after the ‘Go’. On the other hand, the Gaslamp Quarter snatched the most expensive spot, worth $400 Monopoly money. Right below, we find UC San Diego at a pricey $350.
Why did they make a San Diego Monopoly?

“San Diego is one of the most iconic, vibrant cities, in my opinion, in the country,” said Jennifer Tripsea, who works on client partnership for Top Trumps USA. “It has a perfect mix of culture, tourism and local pride, which makes it an ideal fit for any Monopoly city edition.” (quote from San Diego Union-Tribune)
While the others weren’t ‘official’, this is not the first San Diego twist on Monopoly. One version in the 1990s had a classic board, with names adjusted for local landmarks – more updates followed.
The brand new San Diego Monopoly is now available for $40 at local stores or online, right here.
