Heading up to LA for the 2026 World Cup? With major matches happening just up the coast, the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner is undoubtedly one of the best ways to skip the traffic and save some time (and your mental health). But before you pack your bag and head to the station, there’s a big change to Amtrak’s ticketing policy you need to know about.
Reservations are strictly required for Amtrak trips during the World Cup
To manage the expected surge of fans traveling between San Diego and LA, the Pacific Surfliner is moving to an all-reserved system from June 11 through July 19, 2026.
Here’s what that means for your trip:
- No walk-ups: You cannot buy an unreserved ticket and just jump on whichever train is at the platform. You must book a specific departure date and time in advance.
- Pass holders must pre-book: If you use an Amtrak multi-ride pass, you can’t just show it to the conductor. You must use the RideReserve system to lock in your exact train before boarding.
- Suspended programs: Be aware that the Rail 2 Rail and Codeshare programs are suspended on select match days. Metrolink and COASTER passes won’t work on the Surfliner during these times – you need a dedicated, reserved Amtrak ticket.
Trains will sell out fast. If you scored tickets to a game at SoFi Stadium, secure your trip immediately. Plan to arrive at your local station (downtown, Old Town, or Sorrento Valley) at least 45 minutes early.
Also, don’t forget to map out your final connection from LA Union Station to the stadium. You can connect to SoFi Stadium via the World Cup direct shuttle ($1.75). There’s also the Metro’s direct service from Union Station, which costs $1.75 each way and provides a convenient connection to the stadium.
Book early, travel smooth, and enjoy the game!
