When it comes to stress, San Diego is an interesting mix – it’s easy to relax when it comes to our wonderful beaches, sunsets, hikes, and a constant healthy dose of Vitamin C. On the other hand…it’s also easy to feel the weight of the world while sitting in traffic, checking that electricity bill, or paying rent. However, according to recent data, one of the most relaxed spots in the entire country is Irvine, just over an hour up the I-5. Who knew we’re so close to zen-heaven?!
Irvine, California, is one of the most relaxed cities in the US
In its 2025 study of the most and least stressed cities in America, WalletHub ranked Irvine as the 4th least stressed city in the United States. While San Diego holds its own as a fantastic place to live (ranking at nr. 154 out of 182 – lower is better in this list), Irvine has managed to crack the top five by excelling in categories that usually keep us up at night.
At the other end, the most stressful cities in the US are Detroit, Cleveland and Baltimore.
Why is it so chill?

The study evaluated 182 cities across 39 key metrics, including work hours, debt levels, family stability, and health and safety. Irvine consistently scored at the top of the pack. It isn’t just about the great parks and master-planned neighborhoods. The city also ranks incredibly high for safety and financial stability. In fact, Irvine is also frequently cited as one of the safest cities in the country for its size.
For San Diegans, Irvine’s success is more than just a fun fact – it’s a nearby blueprint for a high quality of life. Located just 80 miles north of downtown, Irvine serves as a major employment hub for many commuters in North County.
While San Diego offers the ultimate coastal lifestyle, Irvine’s focus on safety and family-centric planning makes it a tempting neighbor. So, if you’re looking for a family weekend trip to the Great Park or the Pretend City Children’s Museum, this slice of Orange County has mastered the art of the zen lifestyle.
